Reverend Dennis H Livingston
Reverend Dennis H.
Livingston was appointed to Valley Center United Methodist Church on
1 July 2008. He was born
and raised in Springfield, Missouri, and graduated from Glendale
High School in 1972. He
worked as a welder-machinist in Springfield for about eight years
before he matriculated at Southwest Missouri State University (now
Missouri State University) in Springfield.
He graduated in 1984 with a BA in Classics, and he earned a
Masters of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory University
in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1987.
Dennis has served congregations in the Kansas
West Conference since 1991:
Hunter/Pleasant View charge from 1991 to 1993; the
Washington/Linn charge from 1993 to 1997; St. Francis UMC from 1997
to 2002; Ulysses UMC from 2002 to 2008.
Dennis served on the Kansas West Board of Ministry from 1997
to 2008, and he served as Board chair from 2003 to 2008.
Kansas West Annual Conference elected Dennis as a
jurisdictional conference delegate in 2007.
Dennis is married to Theresa, and they have a
son Clancey who plans to graduate from K-State in May of 2009 with a
biology degree. Dennis
likes to read; he plays around on his bass guitar; he plays with his
golden retrievers Jynx and Igor; he is a pilot but doesn't fly much
anymore; he likes to spend time in Red
River, New Mexico, Silverton, Colorado, Ouray, Colorado, and a few
other choice spots in or around the mountains.
He spent a portion of his life heavy into photography and now spends
most of
his time working in the church, but he also devotes as much time as
he can spare on his bicycle.
He is glad to be included in a creative,
growing, active United Methodist congregation close to Wichita, that
maintains a vision of ministry and service. He believes that
the VCUMC is perched on the edge of great things, multiple
challenges, and great growth .
1. When did you begin work at FUMCVC?
1 July 2008
2. What quality in Jesus do you most admire?
His sang-froid.
3. Who has most inspired you?
There have been several, but the
one who comes to mind today is Curtis Lawrence, my university Greek and
classics professor and one of my faculty advisors.
4. When you enter heaven, to whom do you want to
talk first?
Assuming there will be plenty of time to talk to everyone else,
William Shakespeare first.
5. If you could spend a day completely for
yourself, what would you do?
Pilot my own plane to Oxford,
England, read a book in the sun just outside the Radcliff Camera on the
Oxford University campus--and remember everything I read, spend a little
time in the Turl Street shops (books, paper, and stuff), fly home, read
another book over Greenland and Canada, land safely, play with my
golden retrievers Jynx and Igor until they are too tired to
stand up, and then save the best part of the day until last: an evening alone
with Theresa. The magic is that I did this all in one
day.
6. What is your favorite movie?
My favorites are all older and it is impossible to choose just one:
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is hard to beat, but "Shakespeare in
Love", "Amadeus", "Dead Poet's Society" constitute
the best of all time for me. I really like
"3:10 to Yuma"
too, the .
7. What is your favorite book?
Almost always the book I am currently reading. These stand
out, however: To Kill a Mockingbird,
In Cold Blood, and Hamlet--anything
Shakespeare or about Shakespeare,
I recently finished A Touch of the Fingerpost
by Iain Pears. It was very good.
8. What is your favorite restaurant?
In General: The Cheesecake Factory.
In Wichita: currently, Abuelos, Bravos [in VC], Logan's
Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Timberline Steakhouse, Red Rock Canyon Grill,
Doc Greens, Panera Bread,
and Freddy's Frozen Custard.
9. If you were not doing this job, what
would you want to be doing?
Professor of English Literature or Professor of Greek.
10.
What place would you most like to visit?
Santorini (Thera) Greece.
